The standard 40gp container size is a General-Purpose container with an external height of 2.6m (8' 6"). The HC, or High Cube, containers have an extra height clearance, with an external height of 2.9m (9' 6"). In the 20 ft cargo container market, you will find that there are more GPs than HCs.
